Senator Gordon Smith (R-OR) dealt the Bush Administration a
much-deserved embarassment when the Senate approved his measure to strip Bush's proposed Medicaid cuts from the budget. The Medicaid cuts were at the heart of Bush's supposed deficit reduction plan (HA!) that the Republican leadership fought viciously to keep.
Senator Judd Gregg (R-NH) attacked Smith personally and called it "absurd" that billions of dollars in cuts would hurt people.

I would encourage Kossaks to call and voice support for your Republican Senators (Smith in Oregon, Lincoln Chafee of Rhode Island, Norm Coleman of Minnesota, Susan Collins and Olympia Snowe of Maine, Mike DeWine of Ohio, and Arlen Specter of Pennsylvania) who approved this measure. Moderate Republicans should know that they will be supported by their constituents for defying the White House.
