WTF?
This is from Newsweek's online edition:
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/7856560/site/newsweek/
"History: 1776--Washington's War
Prone to doubt, George Washington
never lost faith. Behind his mask of command."
And there's a pic of a painting of Washington with hands folded as if in prayer, gazing heavenward.
The piece is an excerpt from David McCullough's new book, 1776, and nowhere,
nowhere does it say anything about religious faith in Washington's life.
I haven't yet read the book (and I certainly will), so I don't know if there's anything about Washington's religious persuasion in there, but this picture and the piece's title strongly suggest that the article is about Washington's religious faith.
It's not.
The article is six web-pages long. I'm a geek, so I read the whole thing, but I've got to wonder: how many people will just look at the page, see the illustration, read the title, and move on?
What exactly is Newsweek trying to do with this?
They appear to be implying that Washington never lost his religious faith, and that his religious faith was somehow responsible for our success in our first war against a king named George.
Disclaimer/confession: I posted something very much like this as a comment in an open thread last night, but no one responded to it. Maybe it's not worth getting worried about. Am I just getting paranoid? You can be honest with me!
