Here's another allegorical fable, that demonstrates what seems to be the problem with all the objections raised about the "pie fight" ad...
Let's say there was a meeting of progressive activists, and when the meeting was called to order, a few of the participants, declaring themselves to be feminists, brought up objection to the halter tops and hip hugger jeans some of the women were wearing, saying that such displays of a woman's body were inherently sexist and no one should dress in such a way to come to a political progressive's meeting. They felt their sensibilities should be respected and the offenders should cover themselves up.
But then someone else representing themselves an animal rights activist spoke up, and objected to people in attendance wearing who were wearing shoes and jackets made of leather. The presence of leather offended them, and since they were thus offended, they had the right to insist that no one wear leather shoes or jackets at their meeting.
Another person, representing themselves as a vegan, declared they were offended by the person who was eating a piece of cheese, and someone else who was eating a gummy bear, as these things are made from non-vegan animal products. People who eat animals are offensive! How can they be conisdered part of the progressive movement?
Then someone else pointed out that some of the people arrived in cars, and as a bicyclist and environmental activist, they found it offensive to see people driving in cars. How could anyone call themselves "progressive" while still using a vehicle with an internal combustion engine?
A few people at the meeting were cigarette smokers, but even though they hadn't lit one up inside the meeting, someone complained that they could still smell the smoke on them, and were offended by it.
And some of the participants were wearing jewelry consisting of Christian crosses, and other were wearing Wiccan pentagrams, and they found each others' displays of religiosity offensive.
So all the people who were offended, and the ones who were offended by the ones being offended, all got up and stormed out of the meeting of political progressives. And when the stampede ended, the few people left who somehow managed not to offend anyone or be offended, began the discussion:
"So, how can we encourage more people to support progressive political causes and defeat the neocons that are ruining our country? For some reason, the attendance is going down at our meetings..."
