UPDATE: Originally this was a "live thread" of a press conference that Drudge was hyping. I made a quick call to Clinton's office, didn't get anyone on the horn to confirm or deny the 1:15 conference time, but kept the article up because Schumer, Clinton, Reid etc were releasing statements. At this point I'm not sure if the conference already happened or was delayed, but I will update if it happens (and it broadcast) later.
According to the AP and Drudge, Democrats are expanding on their early responses to Karl Rove's comments about 9/11 and will hold a 1:15 PM (ET) press conference.
Story ...
Rove, Bush's chief political adviser, said in a speech Wednesday that "liberals saw the savagery of the 9/11 attacks and wanted to prepare indictments and offer therapy and understanding for our attackers." Conservatives, he said in the speech to the New York state Conservative Party just a few miles north of Ground Zero, "saw the savagery of 9/11 and the attacks and prepared for war."
Rove said the Democratic Party made the mistake of calling for "moderation and restraint" after the terrorist attacks.
Schumer said Democrats were drafting a letter asking Rove to retract his remarks. Jim Manley, spokesman for Senate Democratic leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., also called on President Bush to "immediately repudiate Karl Rove's offensive and outrageous comments."
New Jersey Sens Jon Corzine and Frank Lautenberg will also be at the press conference.
This underscores something that's not frequently mentioned about Hillary - she was the most prominent New York Democrat in office on 9/11. As the last election showed us, being in town on 9/11 and having connections to the victims gives politicians an invaluable layer of national security cred.
