The Discovery Channel is currently (19:00-20:00 pacific) running an episode of "Modern Marvels" entitled "Doomsday Tech." While the first third focused on nuclear war and proliferation, they have just begun a segment on the doomsday potential of our dependency on fossil fuel and the "established problem" of global climate change.
The treatment is thorough. They point out that the changes will be not just in temperature, but also the water cycle. Taking it further, they observe the potential catastrophic consequences of the collapse of the Gulf Stream causing a counter-intuitive ice age in Europe.
They then go on to the problem of peak oil, peak natural gas, and peak coal. They actually discuss the potential for economic collapse.
OK, yeah, it is the History Channel. The examination of each issue is brief, but it is better than I am used to seeing on a channel that tends to glorify war and consumerism. They are raising points that are salient (whether peak oil is now, or in 15 years, we have a problem). They are also talking serious economics of alternatives. This is good. The tide is changing.
