Hillary Clinton is demanding an investigation, complete with hearings. No, not into Karl Rove's antics; nor into Halliburton's fleecing of the taxpayer, nor Bolton's antics, nor our intelligence failures, nor the lack of actual security in our homeland security plan, nor of any of the misdeeds of the regime. Nope: she, in conjunction with Lieberman, Santorum and Brownback, is
demanding an investigation of Grand Theft Auto for the presence of a sex-scene easter egg.
And why not? After all, what's really hurting America right now isn't the deficit or the war or the corruption. Nope: it's computer sex.
(more below the fold)
What Clinton is trying to do here, as far as I can tell, is pander to the values voters the way Al Gore did in the mid-1980s in the heyday of the PMRC. The thing is, you're not going to out-value the Republicans on the value vote. They've got a mortal lock on abortion and denying gay rights; one little fight over a computer game isn't going to impress these folks.
Nor will these hearings add weight to a future bid for President, since most Americans frankly probably couldn't give a shit about a video game.
Instead, Clinton and the other Democrats should be taking cues from the GOP, and focusing on cranking our our base. Frankly, when there's boys dying in Iraq and the government lying its way through everything, most of our base would rather our Senators focus on, you know, our boys dying in Iraq and the government lying its way through everything. GTA just isn't that high a priority for most people compared to these things. In fact, to most people, particularly under the age of 50, this kind of stuff just makes her look stupid and silly, like Al Gore before her.
Of course, there's also the possibility that Clinton legitimately believes that this is worth a full-blown investigation. Which would mean that she is being silly and stupid.
So, here's some helpful advice from me to the former First Lady and potential Presidential candidate:
Cut the fucking crap, Senator, and cut it out now. Because I guarantee this is going to come back to smack you in the face with young voters and progressives. I expect the skewering to start on South Park and The Daily Show any second now.
