I saw
this diary by Snowmoon earlier at work, and I though I'd comment on one talking point that may be taking hold in the wingnutosphere (and if it hasn't, it surely will, as wingnuts ever more stridently look for excuses to bail out Rove). Namely, that Special Prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald is a Democrat.
Now, we all know that wingnuts never let truth get in the way of a good talking point, so I thought I'd check this out. And just about the only info I could find on the topic was
this post by Josh Marshall when Fitzgerald was first appointed (and Ashcroft recused himself). Josh's comment:
At the Washington Post website, the caption under a photo of Fitzgerald seems to identify him as a Republican. But reports from the time of his appointment as US Attorney have him identifying himself as an independent and denying any partisan affiliation.
A quick search of Fundrace.org's database indicates that Patrick Fitzgerald (attorney in Chicago, Illinois) has not made any donations to Democrats OR Republicans.
Fitzgerald was appointed by James Comey, Deputy Attorney General under John Ashcroft. In the 1990's, he wrote up the first criminal indictment of Osama Bin Laden. And he earned his reputation as being tough on both Democrats and Republicans.
It's certainly not surprising that desperate wingnuts are willing to reach for anything to defend Rove. After all, for this bunch, party and power come before reason or even loyalty to country, and if they can find any vapid excuse why they should entirely ignore accusations against the administration, no matter how false, they'll reach for it.
But the bottom line is, this excuse is dead wrong. Let's not let them get started spreading it.
