Shocking. The Republican President of the United States admitted today at a press conference that his thoughts on the damage caused by Katrina was based on what he had heard on the airways. He was asked whether he was misinformed about the breach of the levees. In response, he said, "I, myself (as opposed to some other "I") thought we had dodged a bullet. You know why? Because I was listening to people, probably over the airways, say the bullet has been dodged." Huh? Forgetting for a moment the myriad of questions this silly answer raises, I was struck by the fact that the Republican President relied upon the media to report to him whether the levees broke. Wouldn't there have been FEMA or Corp of Engineers employees monitoring the levees? And wouldn't those people have reported the break in the levee to their superiors?
Evidently not. Instead, our Republican President has found another excuse for his failure to recognize or even comprehend the scope of the disaster. Now, it was the media's fault. The media told him New Orleans dodged a bullet, so he was able to go to Arizona and eat cake with John McCain and then to California to play guitar. Oh, and those myriad of other questions? When did you find out about the breaches Mr. Bush? And when you found out about the breaches, what did you do?
