Just a quick post of an idea I had coming back from a trip - saw a sign in a retirement community that read, "No Taxes on Senior Citizens". What if democrats picked up on this, modified it a bit so wealthy Americans still paid their fair share, and then proposed this, and in doing so, could permanently gain a large block of active voters, and reverse the time honored notion of being the party of "higher taxes"?
Hi all - I'm a first time diary writer. I visit the site daily and appreciate the informed discussions I've found here, though sometimes could do without the way people rip on one another. I think we should save the rants for the folks that deserve them (I love Hunter's), not fellow posters or commentors to this site that obviously show the proper intent, if not always the most informed opinions (such as mine to follow).
Anyway, on my way back from a trip this weekend, I saw a homemade sign that read "No Taxes on Senior Citizens". Why not? Why don't the democrats pick up on this? Seems like a brilliant idea to me. Continue to tax seniors that have incomes over a certain level ($75,000 or $100,000 or so), but not the majority whom, in addition to being the most active voters, are living on fixed or small incomes. Would obviously be more do-able if we could repeal the Bush tax cuts, but this seems like a tax cut that's in line with progressive ideals. It could be a way to permanently dismantle the idea of democrats as the "tax and spend party" - everyone has elderly parents or grandparents, or are or will be elderly at some point themselves. Thoughts?
