Brutality in Iraq is nothing new, but hearing it first-hand from former Marines are rare. The
book is being released in France, in French because there are no
American publishers willing to take the project on.
Massey was discharged from the Marines in May of 2003 for PTSD. The book has helped him heal according to Massey. The PTSD seems to stem from such acts as killing unarmed civilians and realizing that the troops were committing some form of genocide in the name of 'petrol and profit'.
We didn't get much petrol or profit, but brutality and misery came in abundance. Massey tells of how the U.S. military desensitizes troops to violence and other accounts of killing civilians where the sound of gunfire usually triggered (no pun intended) the Marines to action.
Massey is planning on an edition in Spanish sometime next year. Somehow I do not foresee one in English anytime in the near future, lest we place free speech above protecting America's image abroad.
Oh wait, what image????
