I'm sure everyone here has not much respect for d broder, but man he managed to out do himself today. Writing a column ingnoring what shrub did to destroy the budget and advocating throwing SS under the bus. I know the CW on broder is that most of his opinions come from the "cocktail circuit" so I believe this column is particularly ominous.
If this has already been diaried let me know, I'll delete this, I looked at the blog roll did a search and didn't find anything.
So,
here's the rather offensive column, and some of the same old characters show up, that being the dlc of course.
At a panel headed by the DLC's chairman, Iowa Gov. Tom Vilsack, the answer that emerged was: Strike a bipartisan bargain that would involve some short-term tax increases in return for long-term savings on entitlement programs and improvements in the administration of government.
AH, the dlc again. Of course that last sentence brings up the old "fix the admin of gov't for savings" meme. But can anyone really deny that once they start "fixing entitlements for long term savings" that SS is dead? I don't think there is any doubt. That isn't my conclusion, I've read that in a lot of different places. If "they" start fixing SS fugedaboutit, it's toast.
All real dems need to read this column and realize what is being advanced here. broder even gives us this particularly offensive graph:
It also implies a greater readiness on the part of Democrats to reexamine the entitlement spending that poses the long-term danger of unsustainable deficits.
I'm not sure it can be spelled out any more clearly. I'm not sure what dems broder is writing about here, but given the column's concentration on the dlc I guess we can assume any dlc dem will be on board.
