I've had a sneaking suspicion for quite some time that radio host and conservative dingbat Lars Larson was one Crayola short of a full box.
Maybe it's an effort to boost his sagging ratings. Maybe his admiration for Fox News freakshow Bill O'Reilly has finally caused him to lose what little scruples remained. Whatever the case, Lars has decided to rent space in Portland's Pioneer Courthouse Square in order to erect a cross.(more after the jump...)
Why..might you ask?
Larson has his knickers in a bunch over the use of the phrase "holiday tree" to describe the various trees placed in the home to celebrate Christmas.
Lars has jumped on the "War on Christmas" bandwagon and has now become a happy goosestepper in the O'Reilly campaign to make sure no issues of substance or seriousness come under discussion.
Lars gave an interview which aired last evening on our local FOX affiliate. His conclusion? People are missing the "true meaning of Christmas". He's hopeful that his symbol of the murder of Christ will remind people of his birth, which according to Lars can't be remembered using the phrase, "Happy Holidays".
The exclusion of other faiths and beliefs while propping up one Christian sects tale of Christ's birth (not all Christian sects believe Christmas is a celebration of the birth of Christ) might make for a nice ratings bump. Gotta boost those ad revenues to keep KXL afloat.
Christmas in fact has its roots in paganism. Maybe we should call these trees Saturnalia Trees to honor the true meaning of the celebration..which is the Winter Solstice. I suppose asking Lars to actually think about the origin of Christmas and its true meaning is just too much to ask. That would require brain voltage that he has yet to demonstrate.
With all of the divisions in this country right now, conservatives feel the need to make it worse. I guess talking about the War in Iraq, the mess left over from Katrina, their SCOTUS candidate being an anti-choice zealot and the fact that inflation is on the rise just ain't working to keep the base whipped up.
