I think the time to actually propose a motion to create a committee to investigate the impeachment of the President of the United States, NOW, not when it may seem feasible. The reasons are simple and, I think, compelling. As most of us here know, the COM (Corporate OWNED Media) acts effectively, as a willing tool of the Republican party. A depressing number of the publishers and editors have proven, through the past decade at the very least, that they simply will not hold to account the most egregious corruption and outright crimes of any Republican led body. At the same time, they MUST be willfully delighted to ignore, distort and obfuscate the majority of initiatives, statements and proposals of virtually any Democrat on the national scene.
In the electronic media, grandly coiffed news readers will spout Bill Krystol's talking points, no matter how ludicrous and illogical. While in the print media, appalling crowds of well compensated stenographers re-type copy they're given, apparently without qualm and completely uninterrupted by the thought process.
There is no way, given the current climate, that there will EVER be a right time to push for impeachment because the public pressure needed to move inert Congressional asses will simply never rise to an adequate level. The Biggest Losers is more than a brainless, yet popular, TV show; it is us without some dramatic gesture. That's why I say that at least two brave Congresspersons HAVE TO make a formal accusation and demand a vote on surely the most impeach-worthy president the nation has ever suffered.
I know it will not succeed. At this point, that's not important. In my fervid imagination, an official act by the people's representatives could act as an icebreaker, carving a channel through the thick, fecal scum thrown up by our COM. Like jackdaws chasing after a shiny bit of foil whirling in the wind, they simply won't be able to resist it.
Briefly, we will have our opportunity to make a case before the larger public. The brave and hopefully not sacrificial Congressfolk will have their interviews with Fat Tim, Jim McNeil and the cute and gorgeous tag teams of blow dried "personalities" who've replaced the quaint model of so-called anchormen, who once actually began their careers in some form of journalism. Perhaps they could even venture into the ultimately hostile territory of Fox, CNBC and the other alphabets. Evidence could be displayed, with neat charts and graphs, with circles and arrows, and a website could be mentioned with more damning evidence. I am thoroughly disgusted to hear smarmy "pundits" dismissing any mention of the I-word with a careless, "Nobody's talking about that! Are you some kind of conspiracy nut?"
Now here's where I need help. I'm not an expert in Congressional procedure. I'd like to think that such a question would require some time for debate; that a quick thinking Republican (an apparent oxymoron, I know) might not just jump up and call the question to force an immediate vote. And I'm not sure if I would want to force a roll call vote at that point. It might put many Democrats in an unnecessary and unpleasant bind. What I would like to be sure about is that, in calling for a vote on an impeachment committee, that significant prepared evidence could be introduced into the Congressional Record. A roll call vote on that, I would definitely like to see.
So, the question is: who would be willing do this thing? Congressman Conyers, I know you've expressed interest in the question and you're probably already Democratic Enemy No. 1. Why not go for the gold? Tim Ryan, you've given some kick-ass speeches before. Perhaps your 30Something group would like to step up and take a swing for your country.
I certainly do not know how the dynamics would play out in today's House. I am certain the Republicans would be snorting and howling like wounded walruses. No doubt wormtongued "leaders" like From and Reed would be spreading their cheery messages of fear and despair. I simply don't care for the maunderings of dangerous idiots and fools. We have a nation that's been soiled, perhaps for a generation. I don't know and frankly I don't care if such a courageous and righteous act would end someone's political career or make it. I'm of the mind that, when a person makes promises to about 600,000 of his or her fellow citizens and takes an oath to uphold and defend our common constitution, they have a duty to keep their promises. Getting elected is difficult and wearing, I'm sure. However, once elected, simply getting re-elected is NOT sufficient reason for staying in the people's house and taking the people's money.
If you think I'm crazy and such a desperate act as calling a vile criminal a crook would be disastrous, then please convince me. If it would seal the doom of Democrats in 2006, please let me know how. I believe that "staying the course" of DLC-style nuance, triangulation and poll-reading, in the face of what is literally, a vast right wing conspiracy of lethally venal, amoral and duplicitous fog of information controlling kleptomania is even more nuts. Without some way to break through the blanket thrown over us by the COM, we might as well be taking our soapboxes to the peak of El Capitan and shouting lustily. Not enough people will hear and our course to disaster will not alter.
