I wanted to take a second to point out a really important election - it's the race for the Secretary of State of Massachusetts, and I'm endorsing John Bonifaz.
I'm supporting John Bonifaz because at a time when our elections are becoming increasingly marred by vote count disputes, it is crucial to have someone as uniquely qualified as John in a position to ensure the integrity of the democratic process.
As Katherine Harris taught us all in Florida in 2000, we must have honest advocates to serve as Secretaries of State. John Bonifaz knows that voting rights need to be guarded more vigorously than ever as we confront issues of technology and process, fairness and access. He knows that vigilance is needed in the digital information age to protect the concept of one person, one vote.
For John, an informed and engaged citizenry is not just an abstract idea, but a passion backed up by his record. John has been working for years all across America to safeguard the right to vote, and was among the first to go to Ohio to fight (and sue Ken Blackwell) for a fair election count there.
He was awarded a prestigious MacArthur Foundation Fellowship for his work establishing the National Voting Rights Institute and he led the fight to ensure the success of the Massachusetts Clean Money Elections Law. He's a man of integrity. He'll fight for corporate accountability while reducing the paperwork burden on businesses large and small. He will turn his office into the best source of information available to
the citizens about their commonwealth.
One more thing - John's a fighter. That's why he sued George W. Bush to try and stop the Iraq war before it started. That's why Rep. John Conyers asked John to testify at his Downing Street Memo hearing last June, along with Cindy Sheehan and Amb. Joe Wilson.
I know John and I believe in him. I'm backing him for Secretary of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts because he is without a doubt the best person for the job. Check out his website - www.JohnBonifaz.com - John needs your support today to demonstrate the early viability of this campaign. And as we all know, those who stand up against the powerful need our support the most.
Also - If you live in Massachusetts or know someone who does, the statewide caucuses are coming up February 4-12 and John needs your volunteer help. The caucuses will elect the delegates to the Massachusetts Democratic Party's state convention in June and John needs 15% of those delegates in order to appear on the September primary ballot. Sign up on John's website and you'll hear back from the campaign soon. And please remember to give. www.johnbonifaz.com
