Chris Matthews had Dana Millbank from the Washington Post on and showed an attack ad by Americans United. The ad showed close ups of Tom Delay, Jack Abramoff, Scooter Libby and Heckofajob Brownie and said:
"What time is it when Republican leaders are indicted for money laundering, bribery and obstruction of justice while political friends are appointed to run life or death agencies?"
When the ad showed Tom Delay, the voice over said "money laundering". When it showed Abramoff, it said "bribery", Libby had "obstruction of justice" and Brownie had the voice over saying "political friends..."
Then Chris Matthews comes on afterwards and has this exchange with Dana Millbank:
Chris: Have you noticed in the Democrat ad though, they did a closeup on Tom Delay and they said 'bribery'... well that's not a charge against Tom Delay. His charge is this thing about hard money, soft money... it's a political little bit of fandango but no one has accused him yet of bribery but that ad sure does.
Dana: No... Right but nobody holds these ads to any sort of standard at all. There's no standard for accuracy or truth in these things... it's all about whatever innuendo you can put out there.
They're both wrong and the ad is right. Tom Delay was indicted for money laundering and that's exactly what the ad claimed. The ad NEVER accused or implied that delay was indicted for bribery. It's clear that they were referring to Abramoff as his mug was on the screen when the word "bribery" was mentioned. In fact, it is ironic that they are accusing Americans United for no standard of accuracy" when they themselves have no standard of accuracy.
