This might not be worthy of a diary, but I'd like some feedback.
While I like the idea of getting the impeachment of Pee and VeePee to build from the towns and cities up through the state legislatures, I believe there's a pretty compelling case right now for Gonzales.
Below is my letter to my three state legislators (all Dems).
Jump with me.
Dear X, X and X,
State legislatures may call on the US House of Representatives to investigate and impeach high public officials in the Federal Government.
As you may be aware, during the recently held US Senate Judiciary hearings on the warrantless wiretapping of US Persons, the United States Attorney General was exposed as having lied to Congress during his previous testimony (under oath, no less). Answering Senator Feingold during his confirmation hearings, he lied about a program the Administration had approved and implemented during his tenure as White House Counsel.
During the most recent hearings it has become clear that the original testimony was no accident. His public comments and testimony painted the picture of an official deliberately misleading Congress.
If secrecy had been his concern, he could have asked to speak in closed session or he could have simply declined to answer (which he is clearly not averse to doing). He did not. He chose to lie.
This is unacceptable and he should be held accountable.
The highest law enforcement officer in the land cannot be allowed to operate above the very laws he is sworn to defend and uphold. It is not worthy of a nation of laws.
As it is now clear that the Republicans in the US House of Representatives will not investigate of their own initiative, please submit a resolution to the state legislature calling on the House to investigate and, if warranted, impeach General Gonzales.
It is my understanding that such a resolution coming from a state legislature will take precedence over all other business on the House agenda. Representatives will be forced to consider the case (and hopefully their oaths of office).
Obviously, I am not an expert but this has me pretty riled up! While at first, I was simply stunned at his attitude, watching him grin through the questioning has made me angry.
Sincerely,
ME!
So what do you think? Fire away. Style pointers? Typos? Is my logic or are my facts completely ass backwards? Am I naive or what?
It's late here (Seattle) so I'm heading off to bed. I'll check back later and if people hate this, I'll delete.
**UPDATE** Actually, I don't have the time right now to make the changes the commenters below mentioned. It's all fabulous advice and I'm keeping this diary because it will be useful in the future. The only thing I'll add to the letter before I send it will be a request that they contact me if they want specifics. I signed an automated petition once to one of them and she actually wrote a quick note back directly to me. Here's hoping she reads this one with the same attention.**
