George Mason was a leading Anti-Federalist, close friend and ally of Thomas Jefferson and Patrick Henry. He voted against ratification of the original Constitution. Why? Because it DID NOT INCLUDE A BILL OF RIGHTS! Mason fought valiantly to get the bill of rights into the Constitution, and he eventually succeeded. For this, and for many other courageous acts in support of human liberties (he fought slavery valiantly as well, and tried to outlaw slavery, even though he like Jefferson had some slaves, which was a grave error). Mason was not perfect, nor is anyone. However, he was a great American hero, one of the greatest heroes of the early period of American history.
Armando has this one wrong, I feel. He somehow thinks of Mason as being unpatriotic simply because he didn't sign the Constitution. What Armando failed to note or to mention is Mason's reasoning---he simply didn't think the Constitution without a Bill of Rights protected our liberties enough.
In this regard, George Mason was prophetic! If Mason were alive today, he would be fighting as valiantly as Patrick Henry would be fighting to protect our civil liberties!
