They're taking away the New Deal and giving us a Raw Deal, but hey, we are offering a Reel Deal - the Reel Deal Film Festival, that is. For those of you who love political documentaries this is right up your alley.
On June 3, in Flagstaff, Arizona, the Reel Deal Film Festival, organized by the Flagstaff DFA, will be held from 11:00am to 11:00pm. Not only will we have movies, we will have DFA-approved candidates to talk about the themes in those movies. Shoot, there's lots to talk about when you show a film like "The Big Buy."
If you're going to be in the area on June 3rd read more...
Following is a partial list of the films to be shown -
* "The Big Buy: Tom DeLay's Stolen Congress" is the tale of relentless ambition, corporate millions, and one of the most blatant power grabs in American history. This new release connects the dots between big money and big government - it's an indictment of the sale of our political system to the highest bidder and the win-at-any-cost tactics DeLay used to crush his adversaries.
* "Orwell Rolls In His Grave" - 1984 isn't fiction anymore -this disturbing film shows how language is redesigned and history is rewritten.
* "Mission Against Terror" features a different viewpoint on our so-called war on terror.
* "Camp Casey" - a short film where one mother asks, `what is the noble cause my son died for?'
* "Howard Zinn - You Can't Be Neutral On A Moving Train" reminds us what moral indignation is all about and the importance of taking a stand against tyranny in all its forms.
* "Loose Change" might change the way you think about 9/11/01, with evidence derived from news footage, scientific fact and mostly importantly, Americans who suffered through that tragic day.
Here's what we are saying in our press release:
All films are free to the public and spotlight critical issues of the day. Reel Deal film fest also features a variety of short films, movie trailers and prize contests. Discuss the movies with progressive candidates like incumbent State Rep Ann Kirkpatrick, Bruce Wheeler, candidate for Secretary of State, Mark Manoil, candidate for Corporation Commission, and Mike Caccioppoli, candidate for U.S. Congress CD-1.
This all day free film fest is presented by the members of the Flagstaff DFA as a community service. DFA believes hearing a wide range of political opinions is crucial to a functioning democracy. Updated film and speaker listings and times are online at our DFA Flagstaff site. This event is dedicated to the memory of John W. Prather.
We're excited by this event and have worked hard to raise money (did you know you can raise tons of money by holding yard sales?). I hope you can drop by, enjoy the show, help out, or just meet some of the local candidates.
By the way, John Prather, who died earlier this year, was an example of someone who made a difference just by showing up, rolling up his sleeves, and volunteering whenever needed. A wonderful guy and we miss him.
