Please, please, please be careful with the media.
YearlyKos will be a target-rich environment for those who wish us ill. They are legion, they understand how this works as well as we do, and not everyone plays nice. I am particularly concerned about the opportunities for interviews and videos that will damage the progressive movement and DailyKos itself.
I say this as one who has seen himself misrepresented and misquoted in the past, by a reporter whom I don't believe even intended to do the damage she did. It was mere incompetence, but it taught me something.
A couple suggestions below the dots. But I'd really like to hear suggestions from others on this issue.
When in doubt, say nothing to the press. Not everyone is prepared for even a casual interview. Markos is. Jerome is. A lot of people think they are but are not. Don't succumb to an assumed chumminess or the flattery of being asked to hold forth on every topic under the sun.
If you must say something, keep it simple. Do be prepared to make a few clear points on topics you do know about.
There is absolutely nothing wrong with deferring to those more knowledgeable or better prepared to deal with interviews.
Make it very clear that you are speaking as an individual, representing yourself alone. (Obviously this doesn't apply to you, Chairman Dean.)
And whatever else you do, do not snark. Do not joke. Never. It won't work. Worth repeating: Never attempt snark with these people. Leave that to Sam Seder - and somebody say hi to him for me, please. He is doing us a great service.
As the season heats up, we have already begun to see the attacks on this site in the form of trolls as well as attempts to trivialize it on the part of our beltway whore media heroic national press. Nothing is off limits to these people, and the more desperate they get, the more outrageous will be their tactics.
Don't provide any ammunition.
