So I recently realized that I have been posting on Daily Kos for a year now and so I thought I would take some time to reflect on my time here and my interactions with the other posters. I was first introduced to Daily Kos my sophomore year of College Spring 2005. I was heading up the college Democrats and one of my fellow members showed it to me. Now at first I didn't want to check out the site because I thought it would be filled with Democrats like him; die-hard liberals, and I was right to an extent. See I have always been a moderate democrat (not centrist that's something different, centrist democrat is a conservative Democrat.) and at that point I was, and I feel foolish for saying this, a DLC Democrat I thought liberals were a problem for the party. I don't think this anymore.
See my political idol is Bill Clinton and I thought since was a part of the DLC that the DLC was the organization for moderate Democrats. So I first registered at Kos in June 2005 under a screen name that will not be mentioned but that called liberal Democrats Green-lite and praised the DLC. I got trolled rated a lot and posters said I wasn't a Democrat. I soon realized my mistake and got rid of that screen name and started over as SensibleDemocrat which was a name I liked and not one that one that was meant to bash on liberals that some posters thought. At this time I supported the Patriot Act, and the Flag Burning amendment. I supported the former because I thought that if you weren't a terrorist you shouldn't be opposed to this and I opposed the latter because I feel that burning the flag was morally reprehensible. I soon realized I was wrong on these and while I still feel burning the flag is morally reprehensible I know now that its an issue of free speech. Now you may be asking yourself how did I know I was wrong? The answer to that is I based it off my experiences on Kos as well as interacting with my fellow college Democrats, who were all liberal leaving me as the lone moderate. I now realized that I was a centrist Democrat back then and now I am a moderate Democrat. What do I mean by moderate Democrat. I mean this: I am a moderate in the sense that I support the death penalty, think corporations aren't all bad, was for welfare reform, and support free trade. I am liberal in the sense that I want to see some sort of universal health care, gun control, I am pro environment, pro choice, think tax cuts should not go to the wealthy. So I am moderate leaning to the left, which to me is a moderate Democrat. Do I see myself moving more to the left, its doubtful. But my opinion now is that liberals are an important part of this party. So thanks guys it's been fun posting here and I hope to continue posting here in the future.
