Earlier in one of my comments on various threads I made the statement that
"Israel is fast running out of friends, and it's their own fault." Israel's actions in Lebanon have been so over the top, so not targeted at their enemy Hezbollah fighters, that much of the world has been aghast. Only the US and British administration are continuing to give Israel cover in the UN Security Council, and while our Congress has followed in lockstep, Tony Blair is
not having as easy of time of it at home.
Yet there has been the continuing support for the IDF here and elsewhere by Israel loyalists, even under withering commentary.
And then I just came across this Haaretz article and it's responses. And they are interesting to say the least. Jews saying things like 'How can we look in the mirror?" More on the flip...
Let me just quote a few of the comments:
How can Israelis seriously ask those of us who have traditionally supported them--politically, financially, intellectually--to go on defending this kind of crap?
...
I`ll always be pro-Israel, in my heart. But I simply refuse to let my voice be heard defending this mindless, myopic, self-defeating reaction any longer. G-d help you, Israel.
How can we look at yourself in the mirror? How soon do we forget about the time we faced the same brutality? I am ashamed to call my self a Jew. I don`t want anything to do with this anymore.
I have never been accused of being a fair weather friend of Israel and my support goes back for 10:th of years, but I can not lend my support to this kind of actions.
Disgusting. Savage. Barbaric. Those are the words to describe the Israeli government today.
Never again will I speak out in defense of Israel.
Never again will I cringe when people call us murderers and terrorists.
Never again will I donate a penny to any pro-Israel organization.
You want to act like animals, do it on your own and stop demanding money and help from good Jews around the world that don`t want to be tainted with your disgusting actions.
Bravo Israel you are making more enemies, those who were supporting you, are hating something called Israel. We are ashamed of looking in the faces of those we were arguing with about your right to defend your self. How can we defend you now, we would be unreasonnable. Shame on you.
Of course there are many, many more blaming the deaths on Hezbollah's hiding among the civilian population. And how Israel is fighting for it's existence (Israel has the 4th largest military in the world and is fighting for it's existence against a few thousand militants?), and how Israel simply does not target civilians, the IDF's "purity of arms". But it's enlightening to me that Israel is starting to lose some of it's longtime supporters over it's actions in Lebanon. The winds are changing.
