Here is the text of a letter I just sent to my Senator, Frank Lautenberg, of NJ. If former Democratic Senator Lieberman would listen to anyone, perhaps he would listen to one of his most honorable colleagues from and almost adjacent Northeastern state......
"Dear Senator Lautenberg:
I am writing as a 57 year old life-long New Jersey resident who has never voted for a Republican, ever. I fervently believe in the sometimes disorganized, but usually coherent vision of what it means to be a Democrat; a party with a sense of justice, fair play, a sense of community and the wish to help improve the lot of their fellow citizens.
That is why I am writing to you to try to use your good offices to somehow persuade your fellow Senate colleague, Senator Lieberman of Connecticut to abandon his misguided and selfish attempt in mounting a campaign against the fairly elected Democratic candidate, Ned Lamont, in the November elections. It pains me as someone who has always identified myself as a Democrat and has on occasion voted for Democratic candidates who perhaps were not the most qualified persons for an office, but yet supported the Democratic platform and agenda, and advanced the Democratic cause. For that reason, Senator Lieberman, who everyone seems to contend pocesses fine personal qualities, is just proving to the world, that he puts himself above the Democratic party and the party's values of equity and fair play. Personally, I feel that Senator Lieberman had abandoned the principles of the Democratic party even before this election by the way that he enabled the Republicans set the agenda against the Democrats, but now that the Connecticut Democratic voters have spoken, as a true party loyalist, he should abide by the results. Instead, he has chosen to become a former-Democrat.
From what I can read about Ned Lamont, his positions on issues seem no different from those of my Congressman, Rush Holt, who seems to be a man of character without equal in the US Congress.
So I am urging you, as a Senator who returned to the Senate when his party was in trouble and needed his direct assistance (an act that earned you the good feelings of Democrats around the state), that you will speak to the now-formerly Democratic Senator Lieberman, and counsel him for the good of the party, and for his place in history, he abandon his ill-advised and ill-conceived campaign. Does he wish to go down in history in the company of those whose egos and personal agendas cause them to be reviled wherever they go in the future. Tell him that if his actions result in having the opportunities to pick up Congressional seats in this election going by the board, true Democrats will never, never forgive him. I know that I speak for many Democrats across New Jersey who think that this year we may have a chance to reverse the train wreck that the Republicans have made out of this country over the last six years.
Thank you for your honorable service in the Senate on behalf of me and my fellow New Jerseyans and for reading my request. I would respectfully urge you to think about it."
Does anyone think that this sort of feedback to our Democratic Senators will make a difference???
