The Kurds have been supportive of us for quite a while. The Kurds have their own government in place.
Kurdish territory is relatively peaceful. As a matter of fact, some areas are so peaceful that the Kurds are pushing very hard for western tourists to come.
Definitely in comparison, the Kurds are pro-western. Young Kurdish women wear dresses to classes in Kurdish schools! They vote, too, and don't worry about their fathers and brothers killing them.
So...
Why don't we withdraw our troops by air through Kirkuk and Mosul? Declare victory, talk up liberal democratic Kurdistan and get out. Leave all the equipment behind for the Kurds to use against the Sunnis and Shiites, who will probably be too busy fighting each other to mount any organized invasions of Kurdish territory, anyway. Most of the equipment needs serious refurbishment, too. All of those parts that can be bought from the U.S. using Kurdish oil. And think of the boom times for military contractors! Instead of refurbishing equipment, we could pump some tax money (hey, we'd have it because we wouldn't be spending it in Baghdad and it would be here at home, where we could tax it again) into brand new equipment, including plenty of reinforced humvees and up-to-date flak vests for all personnel, including National Guardsmen. Really, let's not screw around this time. No secondhand, passed-down, nearly obsolete stuff for the National Guard anymore. Let's make sure we have every military unit that has any potential of seeing active duty outside of the United States equiped or ready to be equiped to full strength because what's needed is in stock, not on order.
And let's take some money and make sure all Iraq War vets and their families are ok. Let's make sure they have food, shelter, medical care...and let's have a celebration. Let's have parades and fireworks. And let's have a day of remembrance for those we've lost.
The Sunnis and Shiites? This is going to offend a few of you, but let's let them fight it out. If they can't see how disastrous that would be, well, they can't see it now, can they? Their civil war is happening now. We can't stop it. The Croats and the Serbs had to have it out. The Indians and Pakistanis have fought a few times, though the next one will be the last one. The only way that civil war is going to end is if the countries in the region stop it. We could even provide some nice locations for the peace conference.
