Dear Senator Mitchell,
As you are probably well aware by now, the docudrama "The Path to 9/11" was written in a way that misrepresents history in order to lay the blame for this national tragedy with the Clinton administration. For Disney/ABC to air such a divisive distortion at all is hard to fathom, but to broadcast it on the five year anniversary of the 9/11 attacks is profoundly disturbing.
I come to you as someone who has served this great nation - I was in the 82d Airborne Division during Reagan's second term - and with recognition of your service to our country as Senate Majority Leader, and earlier in the Army Counterintelligence Corps. You stood up to Oliver North and the polarizing politics he represented when you told him:
"Please recognize that it is possible for an American to disagree with you on aid to the Contras and still love God, and still love this country, just as much as you do. Although He is regularly asked to do so, God does not take sides in American politics. And in America, disagreement with the policies of the government is not evidence of lack of patriotism."
Now, Senator, I ask you to please consider using whatever leverage you may have, as Disney's Chairman of the Board, to keep this polarizing "docudrama" off the air on this most somber of anniversaries. Ours is a country that needs encouragement to come closer together, not more fuel thrown on the fires that divide us.
Respectfully,
James Paisley
