I decided to check out a website for a Democratic challenger in a house race in another state. Like so many other Democratic websites, under the issues page, I could not find a reference to this candidates stand on a woman's right to decide whether or not to carry a pregnancy to term. I decided to quantify my impression that a lot of candidates' websites skirt the issue, so to speak.
Over the weekend, I hope to look at the websites for the Democratic representatives listed in the daily election round-ups, but for today, I have completed a look at the senatorial campaign website, under their "Issues" section only; perhaps they commented elsewhere on their site.
See the results below.
Only one website list Reproductive Freedom as a category.
This web site is
http://nedlamont.com/...
Ned Lamont is pro-choice.
For the other sites, I looked into other categories for references. Four websites mentioned the candidate position on abortion, but you have to really look for it.
Under Religion, one candidate listed his position
http://www.haroldfordjr.com/...
Harold Ford is pro-choice.
Under Protecting our Rights, one candidate listed her position
http://www.cantwell.com/...
Maria Cantwell is pro-choice
Under Women, but buried within other pages, one candidate listed her position in at least two different places
http://www.radnofsky.com/...
http://www.radnofsky.com/...
Barbara Ann Radnofsky is pro-choice.
Under Personal Freedoms, one candidate listed his position
http://www.carterfornevada.com/...
Jack Carter is pro-choice.
The Healthcare, Privacy, Family, and "Standing up for Women's Rights" links did not contain references to abortion.
Two pro-choice candidates that do not mention woman's right to decide include
Daniel Akaka
http://akaka2006.org/...
Ben Cardin
http://www.bencardin.com/...
And one Democratic candidate against choice does not list his opposition to a woman's right to choose (which frankly I find a bit odd, since his anti-choice position and his name recognition are damn near the top two reason he is the candidate, and part of the reason he has national name recognition is because he shares a name with his father - whose position on abortion as a Democrat is well known and who is named in a Supreme Court case on the topic! http://en.wikipedia.org/...)
Bob Casey, Jr. - Senate
http://www.casey2006.com/
Bob Casey does not support a woman's right to choose
The Democratic candidate (Phil Avillo, www.avilloforcongress.com) in my district (PA-19) does not list the issue on his issue page, but he was endorsed by Planned Parenthood - see http://www.pppavotes.org/... and http://www.avilloforcongress.com/...
For all of the mojo we are giving candidates who are pushing back the right wing agenda by standing up and saying what they believe, I hope pro-choice candidates will proudly say they are pro-choice and vote that way unwaveringly.
