The NRA has for many years fought for gun ownership and 2nd amendment priviliges. This fight was based upon the belief that gun ownership among private citizens was the last bastion to totalitarianism.

If so, when would you deem the appropriate time to begin the revolution ?

Let's see;
Indefinite detainment of Americans is now legal.
Torture of Americans is now legal.
Habeus Corpus has been stripped for Americans.
Bush has been handed dictatorial powers.
An Air Force General has called openly for the utilization of pain producing but non-lethal weaponry upon innocent American civilians.
Americans can no longer exercise free speech unless in pre-determined "free speech" zones.
Police can now bust into your homes in the middle of the night without a warrant.
Crual and Unusual punishment is now standard fare in American Penal institutions.
People are routinely locked up for decades for smoking a plant.
You have no right to privacy.
Phones are tapped, e-mails are read, bank records are poured through.

Funny, after the 1st WTC attack, Clinton made sure the perpetrators were caught, tried and are now incarcerated. He didn't do any of the aforementioned illegalities yet, somehow justice was served. They caught them, tried them and sentenced them.

OKC ? Same thing. Nichols is in jail and McVeigh is dead.
Yet, the NRA railed against Clinton, how he was destroying your rights !

Bush and Cheny are completely dismantling the Constitution and Bill of Rights and nary a whisper from the NRA.

Where's the outrage now ? Your King George buried gun confiscation in the "Bio-Terror" bill. No outrage ? Where's the hour long documentaries showing huge magnetic cranes picking up a ton of guns at one swoop heading for the incinerator ? Where's the scathing editorials against "Big Brother" now ?

Geez, you don't suppose the NRA was just another shill for the Republican party ? Nah ! I'm sure the millions of Democrats that call themselves NRA members will be thrilled with your continued vigilance.

Ah, good old Wayne LaPierre ! All that weaponry Wayne and no tyranny in sight ? Thank goodness we have stalwarts like you patrolling the watchtower.

So ? When's the revolution again ?

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

You can add a private note to this diary when hotlisting it:
Are you sure you want to remove this diary from your hotlist?
Are you sure you want to remove your recommendation? You can only recommend a diary once, so you will not be able to re-recommend it afterwards.

Who says you can't teach old dogs new tricks --or have them dig down in their bags and pull out the magic of our Constitution and our legal system.

Might want to put those guns back in the holster for awhile. Itchy fingers are dangerous.

  •  Do Not Wish For That Which You Do Not Want (6+ / 0-)

In my opinion, this country is somewhat closer than it realizes to precisely the sort of behavior that NP40 is actually not advocating.  I do not think this is a good thing, but am not clear what can be done about it.

You may or may not have noticed that when the NOLA City Government or people who thought they were carrying out its directives started to confiscate firearms, the Army units supporting disaster relief emphasized that they would have nothing to do with confiscation. Rather rapidly, the people in question backed off.

Readers should realize that the NRA is really a very moderate 2nd Amendment Defense Group, relative to other groups defending the Second Amendment such as the Gun Owners of America or the Jews for the Protection of Firearms Ownership or the Pink Pistols ("Armed Gays Don't Get Bashed"), and that if you are concerned about this sort of issue, the NRA will trail along in the rear on these topics.

    •  If they are such a "moderate" group (0+ / 0-)

Why in the world do they spend all their calling my house to threaten that "Hillary Clinton wants to take away your guns." I call BS. The NRA may have been a moderate group at one time, they ain't now though. They are a partisan bunch of delusional hacks. I have NEVER heard Hillary claim she has any intention of touching the 2nd amendment.

      •  in comparison to two of the groups cited - (0+ / 0-)

the Gun Owners of America and Jews for the Protection of Firearms Ownership, the NRA are models of moderation and propriety.  Seriously.  Those guys are scary.

In the grand scheme of things, I'd agree with your basic premise - you can't call the NRA "moderate" in comparison to normal folks.  And their obsession with Hillary (she's been mentioned in every mailer I've ever gotten from them) is flat out bizarre.

        •  It's a toss up on who is more obssessed with (0+ / 0-)

Hillary, Tweety or the NRA? On the other hand, everytime the NRA calls our house to warn my husband about Hillary I think he thinks a little more about WHY they are targetting her. In this household, it has kind of backfired on them. My husband has never been a Hillary fan but the obssession the right has with her may just cause him to hod his nose and vote for her when push comes to shove.

        http://JPFO.ORG
        http://www.gunowners.org

These sites tend to speak to concrete pieces of legislation and other actions that disturb our fellow Americans--some should disturb most readers here--and that incidentally tend to determine which political aprties many gun owners and supporters will and will not support.

  •  It's a good point. (7+ / 0-)

I'm a gun-owning, RKBA Kossack.  But not a member of the NRA, because they for too long have been just shills for the GOP.  And you make a good point.  One of the reasons that I say that Dems ought to simply say that they are for the entire Bill of Rights.  Do this and millions of gun owners who don't care for the GOP's other policies and governance will come flocking to us.

"When they pull it from my cold, dead hands"!
    Yeah right.

I'm a Wisconsinite as well. Gun ownership and hunting is a right of passage here.

There is absolutely NO doubt in my mind that the Dems would never have become irrelevant and outnumbered in both houses of congress if they had NOT adopted "gun control" as their platform.
Millions of gun owners consider their weapons their "last bastion".

If Dems supported gun ownership along with all of our other "rights", they would never have lost in the 90's. If Dems ever come around to preserving the 2nd amendment as vociferously as they do the 1st or 4th, Rethugs would NEVER hold a majority again.

Had you not brought Clinton in, and got bashy there in the second half of the diary, I'd have mailed this to my brother, an NRA life member, and Independent Republican voter. As it sits on the board, the last would undo the thoughtful consideration of the question.
