I don't tend to read the campus newspaper all that often but I happened to take a look at their news feed tonight and found this little nugget of news.
From Michigan State University's State News...
This could be the nudge that gets Granholm over the hump in November, as she was endorsed yesterday by Muhammad Ali and his wife, something that might more than balance out the Iacocca endorsement of DeVos.
A little bit more below the fold...
Boxing legend Muhammad Ali and his wife announced Wednesday their support for Granholm's re-election and her work to reduce restrictions on stem cell research in Michigan.
Ali and his wife, Lonnie, also signed the governor's petition calling legislators to advance embryonic research in Michigan.
Ali was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease in 1982 and has since advocated for stem cell research, which might lead to a cure for the disease.
"We are joining Gov. Granholm in encouraging all Michigan citizens to unite in the fight to ease the restrictions on stem cell research in Michigan," Ali said in a statement released by Granholm's re-election campaign.
I have not been the hugest fan of Granholm as her cutting of funding for the arts cost me my job, but considering that the state house is run by Republicans, I can (somewhat, though not entirely) appreciate the bind she was in.
This DeVos scares me. His plans will no doubt continue the trend of cutting taxes for the wealthy and shrinking the state's coffers. Lately, he has come out for teaching intelligent design, and he has long been a supporter of school vouchers.
His debate appearance the other night reminded me of Nixon in his debate with Kennedy in 1960 – five o'clock shadow and weasley looking, a departure from the very squeaky-clean, glowy campaign ads he's been running.
