Federal officials are probing scathing allegations that the Romney administration falsely claimed to conduct safety inspections in the Big Dig tunnel that collapsed and killed a woman in July.
The Securities and Exchange Commission is zeroing in on state financial documents from 2005 - cited in a new report by state Inspector General Gregory Sullivan - indicating that Gov. Mitt Romney was reviewing the safety of the Big Dig, when in fact the administration was only checking leaks in the Interstate 93 tunnel.
"Despite repeated assurances to bondholders, (MassHighway and Romney's Executive Office of Transportation) . . . did not inspect the I-90 connector tunnel section where the July 10, 2006, collapse occurred," Sullivan's report states. "It is clear that casual disregard for the truth was grossly inappropriate."
This is serious here folks. These are allegations at these point, but Romney is one of the golden child candidates for 2008 for the GOP. If this is true that he and his administration falsified documents, swore that they did inspections that never occured, then this might be the biggest scandal of this year.
Somebody died. Milena Del Valle was her name. Romney and his crew said they checked the section of the tunnel that collapsed, but apparently they were lying. If true, this is not just a scandal, but criminal IMHO. A DA with a set of ethics should investigate this locally and prosecute anybody and everybody who put this woman's life in danger.
I hope this doesn't get lost in the midst of all the other wrong doing these twisted souls are perpetrating, but it looks like the incompetency is not just killing our citizens in Iraq, but at home as well.
