The wife and two daughters of missing CNET senior editor James Kim have been found alive in southwest Oregon and were airlifted to a local hospital, authorities announced at a press conference Monday afternoon.
James Kim left the car on foot two days ago to seek help and has not yet been found, Josephine County Undersheriff Brian Anderson said at the news conference in Merlin, Ore. A full-scale ground and air search for him continues. "He's a resourceful guy and we're hoping for the best," said Mike Weinstein, a detective with the Portland Police Bureau's Missing Persons Unit.
According to the official speaking at the news conference, the conditions of Kati, Penelope and Sabine are not yet known, but Oregon State Police said early reports are encouraging. More details are expected at a press conference at 5 p.m. PST, which CNET will stream live.
At approximately 1:45 p.m. PST, search-and-rescue officials were notified that a vehicle and a female in the middle of the road waving an umbrella were spotted by a helicopter search crew near the Rogue River in the area of Bear Camp Viewpoint off Bear Camp Road, according to a statement from Oregon State Police. This location is near the Curry/Josephine County line in Josephine County.
The three were flown to a separate location. From there, they will be transported to a local hospital to be evaluated for treatment.
Family and friends are joyful beyond words. We just got off the phone with Sandy and Phil Fleming, our friends, Kati's father and mother, and the most grateful grandparents in the world. Of course, they are still concerned about James. He set out on foot from where the car had veered off the road two days ago to try to find help.
Thank you to all your words of encouragement, your thoughts and prayers. Please keep James in your thoughts and prayers that he will also be found safe and sound.
