This is another in a series of pictures showing what this year's blue wave looks like. Each congressional district has equal size in these cartograms. So far, I've done New England, the Mid-Atlantic, and most of the Ohio Valley, and Michigan.
Here's how things stood before the 2006 election. (Click the thumbnails for larger images.)
Here's how things came out on Election Night.
Next are maps showing the margin of victory.
Finally, here's a map showing the margin-of-victory change from 2004 to 2006.
Kirk, Roskam, and Weller deserve strong opposition every cycle until they lose. In particular, Weller did quite poorly for a non-targeted incumbent. I could see the 14th being very competitive when Hastert steps down.
Democrats should also redistrict the heck out of the Chicago suburbs in 2011. For example, dividing the 9th and 10th Districts vertically instead of horizontally would make them both Democratic. After only a cursory glance, I think we could safely gain two or three seats despite Illinois losing a seat.
Here are thumbnails of the districts. My favorite ordinary maps of congressional districts are from the Census Bureau and the Interior Department.
