The Rant
Lots of people (including my mom and a few posters here) say marches are useless, especially when the MSM dosn’t report or under reports them, and yes Marching does have a certain amount of splitting in the windishness to it, but people in high places do take notice, really they do. They may never acknowledge it, but I bet dollars to doughnuts that Rove noticed, (ok this weekend he may have been busy with the whole Libby Trial thing . . .)
And yes the MSM will under report the numbers and focus on the more colorful, fringe protestors, but I think its better to get out there and have video of the masses marching then not because people will notice, even if it’s just word of month, it counts, it helps to spread the word to co-workers, friends, on the blogs, that Bushco has got to go, that they aren't alone in thinking that the government is off the rails.
Plus, Marching empowers and emboldens the Marchers. Its a hell of a good time and moral booster, we are after all, social animals. Emboldened Marchers can go forth, blog, write LTE, place freebe bumper stickers on their cars, tell their friends, geez keep this up and we could have a movement, (re Alice’s Restaurant (a very funny song by Arlo Guthire)
On a personal level, when I was a kid I wondered why people in Nazi Germany didn’t protest and swore if I was in a similar situation I won’t go down without doing something. , (Not to say people didn’t oppose the nazi government, but that’s what I was left to believe in grade school.)Well, NOWS THE TIME - the newly elected DEMS better keep fighting, we haven't won
But mostly I went because, protest and public discourse is fundamentally AMERICAN and a vital part of a functioning DEMOCRACY, this is what a DEMOCRACY looks like, those kool-aid drinking f-ckers who are trying to distort this county into a wrapped Christian theocracy where your social behaviors are governed by a fundie government and corporations are free to exploit the workers as the environmental crisis grows out of control are wrong. I want my county back, NOW.
See the glory in live action here,
This is what Democracy Looks Like
Oh, did I mention that I had a really good time, and loved meeting the people behind the posts.
