RealApparent pipe bombs were apparently being found at the same time all this was going on.
Note: commenters were correct; I wrote this a little too quickly and misspoke. The point was that there were other objects all being brought to the police's attention in rapid succession...not just these LED ads.
The Boston Police have posted this chronology.
- It's not necessarily true they were all up for 3 weeks...the guy could be lying or could have installed them over the course of 3 weeks or something.
- In other cities they might have been placed in less stupid areas, such as on stores in collegetowns and not on highways and bridges.
Now I tend to agree that the police, politicians, and media overreacted and caused way more fear than was necessary, and that they should have figured out sooner that these things were harmless. There are many real issues here...
But I'm really disappointed at how eager savvy progressive people are a little too eager to blame and belittle their favorite targets (police, politicians, and media), when they should know better that not all the information is out yet. Kos and almost everyone else I've seen online are doing that instead of having real discussions about the culture of fear that tends to produce these overreactions. So shame on you, Kos, for undermining those discussions with factually-challenged juvenile insults.
