I just finished watching The Lord of the Rings trilogy on DVD -- the extended editions. Something like 11 or 12 hours of movies over three nights.
It occurs to me, after having just finished The Return of the King, that Republicans are like Gollumn. More after the break.
I'll presume that everyone knows who Gollum is. If you don't, go here.
- Gollum is obsessed with "his precious". He has no sense of balance, of the big picture, of the forest for the trees. (PNAC).
- He's willing to partner with evil if it suits his needs (Shelob, 1980's Iraq & Iran, Uzbekistan, Indonesia, Contras, etc. etc. etc.).
- He lies, then turns around and claims he didn't lie. (Scooter Libby)
- He believes lying is OK if it serves his needs (Straussians)
- He leads those whom he purportedly serves into dangerous traps (Cirith Ungol, Iraq)
- He undermines the truly brave and courageous (Sam Gamgee, Jack Murtha?)
- His fall into the fiery pit of Mount Doom ushers in a Fourth Age of peace and prosperity
Okay, I'm hoping for that last one to be realized in real life but we'll see how it turns out. In the meantime....
Gollum! Gollum!
