Dr. Wykes, an investigator for Global Witness, was arrested and detained in Angola February 19th. She was in Angola to investigate the disparity between the vasit oil revenues earned by the Angolan oil industry and the crippling poverty persistent in Angola.
Dr. Wykes was arrested and detained without any formal charges and later charged with espionage. The world wide media was silent on her detention and arrest. Angola is rapidly becoming a leading oil resource for the U.S. and China. The government owns all of the oil industry yet the profits are not funneled down to its citizens. Several international organizations are critical of the corruption. Dr. Wykes was there to speak to representatives from all sectors to file a report.
Good news! She was released and allowed to return to London on March 16, Global Witness reports.
