Former Wisconsin Governor Tommy Thompson has announced his candidacy. While time will tell whether his candidacy will sink or soar, there are many reasons why this guy could end up the Repuke presidential nominee. He lacks the baggage and potential liabilities that could derail the McCain and Giuliani bids, and is popular as free beer in moderate Wisconcin, showing an appeal that extends beyond the conservative base.
Scratch the moderate surface and we see a Bush loyalist and cabinet member who could sweep up many of the demographic groups that voted for Bush in 2000 and 2004, and who could bring in moderates without losing the base.
Thompson may not have a great deal of name recognition now, but it IS early, and if Giuliani and/or McCain fail (and there are many reasons to believe they could), Thompson and fellow dark-horse Mike Huckabee, another former governor, could end up being the last men standing, or possibly facing off with Mitt Romney.
What do our Cheeseheads here at dKos think? Does Thompson have a chance? What kind of president would he be if America allowed him to slip in the White House back door?
