I just attended a town hall meeting with Congressman Frank Lucas, Oklahoma's 3rd District Congressman. He managed to both slur Nancy Pelosi and blame environmentalists for illegal immigration in a short space of time.
Since he represents me, too (currently a life-long Democrat, although that may change to Independent in September), as well as the wing-nuts Oklahoma is full of, I decided to attend.
What was depressing was not Lucas's mindless conservatism - that is to be expected given his record and "F" rating from the NAACP - but the input from our "Greatest Generation" present at the meeting. One couple in their 70's believed in some conspiracy theory about one North American Union where our country would be united with Mexico and Canada and we would have one currency. I asked them for their news source on this and they said NAFTA. I reminded them NAFTA is an agreement, not a news source, and they refused to answer. They finally responded that if there were "any Democrats" in the room, they should check into what Hillary Clinton had REALLY done. Thinking: "all those years with the Children's Defense Fund?" and then thinking, no, I doubt that is what they are referring to. Boy, do the wingnuts love to hate the Clintons. Those eight years of peace & prosperity were just awful. Is this some Faux News meme that we are going to lose our country in unifying with Mexico and Canada? Another, younger, one was upset that anyone in this country can get free medical care in the emergency room. Hard to believe that a century or so ago, Oklahoma had one of the largest Progressive Movements in the country. Or that we produced Will Rogers. There's an old Marxist expression, "identification with the oppressor." That fits my state to a "T."
