It is a rare opportunity to see political blunders occur with such rapidity. However, the Bush Administration has made clear its desire to continue on, in blind stupidity, not caring about the hilarity of its actions, nor about the damage that has been caused to this great country.
Consider for a moment Alberto Gonzales's recently prepared statement to the House Judiciary Committee. According to Reuters, Gonzales will say, at tomorrow's hearing,
"There are two options available in light of these allegations," Gonzales said. "I could walk away or I could devote my time, effort and energy to fix the problems."
"Since I have never been one to quit, I decided that the best course of action was to remain here and fix the problems."
Gonzales and this White House, have never been one to quit, or back down from a fight. The President desires to continue his ill advised military blunder in Iraq, in order to prevent "the terrorists" from knowing we will leave. Considering that our troops and Iraqi civilians are dying at an alarmingly high rate, one can only assume that "the terrorists" must indeed want us to leave. Indeed, they must expect that we will leave. The President has said we will leave, just not on "his watch." This irony has not been lost on the President.
Mr. Bush is certain, beyond all doubt, the Iraqi insurgents flew the planes that brought down the buildings on 9/11. Forgetting for a moment that we didn't invade Iraq until well after 9/11, we are being told by this White House, that Iraq and Al Qaida were in cahoots on 9/11 planning. This after the President told us that "no-one in his administration" had made the claim that the two nations were connected. Of course, that was after Cheney told a CNBC reporter that the evidence was "clear that the two were connected." While I am not one to judge one's sense of comedic timing, I am a little concerned that the Administration is playing with us like this.
The Bush Administration is full of contradictions. It could be a plan to sustain comedians with plenty of material. It could be a series of steps toward a police state. Or, it could just be more of the same, stumbling, bumbling, ineptitude which has plagued this Administration from day one. I'm not sure which one it is. I am sure that the President, and his Administration, will never back down from a fight.
Our problem, as a nation, is that the Administration is fighting with itself, with its own reality, just as much as it's fighting with the rule of law.
