Standard Disclaimers here: While my personal preference amongst Democratic candidates is strongest for Edwards, I would happily vote in the general election for just about ANY Dem. over any Rethug. For the most part, I am impressed, quite impressed, with Obama, but have reservations re: Hillary although I would still vote for her in a New York second...
I just saw the following report regarding a speech delivered by Obama, and...
I just saw the following report:
http://www.nytimes.com/...
regarding a speech delivered by Obama, and....if one scrolls down....one finds the following statement in the NYTimes article:
"He also said it was wrong for anti-war activists to protest at military funerals, declaring: "It needs to stop."" (The only directly-quoted words from Obama himself are the: "It needs to stop").
Is it just possible that the NYTimes is confusing pacifists/dissidents with the deservedly reviled, odious, Westboro Baptist Church ??? No group of dissenters/war opponents/members of the reality-based community of which I am aware engages in conduct as reprehensible as disrupting funerals...but, I could of course be mistaken.
It seems at first glance to be a serious case of mis-reporting by the NYTimes: given that:
A transcript of Senator Obama's words can be found at:
http://my.barackobama.com/...
The important words, and I quote Senator Obama directly, are:
"And our sacred trust does not end when a service-member dies. The graves of our veterans are hallowed ground. When men and women who die in service to this country are laid to rest, there must be no protests near the funerals. It’s wrong and it needs to stop."
This is a sentiment which I think we can all agree upon and share !!! Note carefully, no mention whatsoever of "anti-war activist" in Obama's speech.
However, this meme does appear in the NYTimes report. It makes me wonder, that maybe, this is again insidious spin from the coporate MSM.
In any event, "anti-war activist" = Fred Phelps and the Westboro Baptist Church is emphatically NOT a meme I would enjoy to see encouraged (or even tacitly permitted) by ANY media, mainstream/corporate or otherwise.
