We've been down this road before. Bush asks for more money; the Dems cave. Shake and repeat. It's gonna happen anyway, no matter how hard we scream. (HRC, where ARE you?)
This time, let's at least try to get something for it.
The Republicans had a great idea way back in the late 80s, called "PAYGO" -- if you want money for a project, you have to provide the means to pay for it.
Well, we have to come up with some $50 billion extra that we don't have. If Bush wants his money, Congress should insist that he accept a targeted tax increase.
The obvious place to start is by imposing a 90% excess profit tax on all military contractors. After all, we are at war, and our companies should be motivated by patriotism, right?
While we're at it, let's impose a temporary surtax of 10% on all personal income over $1,000,000, and 20% on all over $5,000,000, to continue until the war has ended and 90% of our troops are home. It will give Bush's base -- "the haves and the have-mores" -- a powerful incentive to dissuade him from continuing his disastrous policy.
I haven't run the numbers -- just floating the idea. Of course, I solicit suggestions from better minds than mine. Please. Have at it!!!
