I was disappointed when I first read Edwards's health plan, because it wasn't a single-payer, keep-it-simple plan. Thinking about it, though, and knowing how bright Edwards is, I began to realize how very brilliant this plan is, to let the "market forces" decide the outcome, and may the best plan win. Not to mention, insurance industry profits vs. American lives in a zero-sum game is an abomination.
You wouldn't have to sunset anything. People who desperately need some kind of health coverage would have it right away, and others who want to keep their private coverage could, without mandated change. The modest initial changes would be a shot across the bow for the health insurance industry. Insurance execs, employees, and agents would have to start retraining or looking for other work, just like all the rest of us have, with outsourcing and other changes in the job market.
Also, starting with a less ambitious plan, pilot programs are possible, instead of jumping in with everybody on the same plan all at once, and no testing. Yep, JRE has my vote and my confidence.
