Turns out, legislatively speaking, nobody can stop Mr. Bush's War because the Senate mysteriously now needs 60 votes to get anything passed. (First of all-- who knew? And secondly, if that is indeed the case, how in the name of God did we ever get anything done in this country?)
And seeing that the Democratic Leadership is as wary of impeachment as an awkward teenage girl contemplating bikini season (yes, we all know there's a chance she'll end up looking fat and the mean boys will make fun of her... on the other hand, maybe, just maybe... she'd be fabulous).
One must wonder, what's a Congress to do? (That is other than gossiping about what certain Members are doing with their... er... members.)
Okay, so here's a crazy thought-- maybe Congress could do one of the things it does best and LOOK INTO SOME SHIT.
For starters, how about the billions of dollars that seem to have gone missing? Or the tens of thousands of lost weapons?
This could even be considered a bi-partisan effort, because, to reiterate:
BILLIONS OF DOLLARS AND THOUSANDS OF GUNS HAVE JUST. BEEN. FUCKING. LOST!
Even the Republicans must be curious about where all our stuff went. Only Tony Montana could spin a bunch of misappropriated guns and cash as a positive development. The old saw "follow the money" defintely applies, as does the Kneadleeder Corollary "if you can't follow the money at least try to figure out who's got the goddammed weapons".
Congress gets to do what they do best-- hold press conferences about the investigations, appoint committees to assist in the investigations, consult with counsel regarding matters raised by the investigations-- all that good, noisy, "look-at-me" shit they love.
There's an excellent chance those investigations would lead to some very... interesting places. And then maybe Congress could actually put a specific part of our Constitution "back on the table" and perhaps ultimately, end Mr. Bush's miserable War.
Or:
Congress can spend the next 14 months, trying to convince themselves that they really are an effective "check" and a valuable "balance" to the Executive branch. And who knows? Maybe we'll all get lucky and there will be enough left of our country and our Constitution to make Congress feel that they've actually "won" something worth winning.
I'm just saying...
