Kurd PKK terrorists killed nine Turkish soldiers today, all but ensuring a Turkish invasion of Iraq.
The Turkish parliament voted overwhelmingly just days ago to authorize NATO'S second largest military to attack PKK bases inside Kurdish Iraq. And it gets worse.
In a story ignored in the MSM we get this disturbing news:
Syrian President Assad speaking from Turkey came out strongly in support of Turkey's plan to attack PKK bases in Iraq. From Kuwait:
ANKARA, Oct 17 (KUNA) -- Visiting Syrian President Bashar al-Assad said on Wednesday that his country supports Turkish decisions to fight terrorism.
Assad has been given official reception at the Turkish Presidential palace following which he held in-camera talks with President Abdullah Gul.
The two presidents held a joint conference, during which Assad voiced support to Turkey's cross-border operation to fight against outlawed Kurdish Workers' Party )PKK) rebels in northern Iraq.
Embattled Iraqi President Jalal Talabani shit bricks. Unlike most Americans, Talabani can see bloodbath scrawled large across the wall. From Al Jezeera:
Iraqi president Jalal Talabani condemned Syria's support for a possible Turkish military incursion into northern Iraq to attack Kurdish based fighters. Jalal Talabani told the pan-Arab Asharq al-Awsat newspaper that recent remarks by Bashad al-Assad, the Syrian president, backing military action were "dangerous".
On Saturday, the Iraqi parliament debated a motion condemning Turkey for threatening the cross-border raid.
Massoud Barzani, the Kurd leader, threatened days ago that the Kurds would fight to repel any Turkish incursion. This stunning news marks a major departure from past Kurd policy. Formerly Kurd authorities worked with Turkey against the PKK. With new oil deals signed with key Bush buddies, the Kurds may wish to use the crisis with Turkey to bring an independent Kurdish state into existence.
Central Asia is changing. Iran and Russia are working together to anchor a new alliance against the US and its allies there and in the Middle East. Turkey has some new friends who have decided to up the ante against the US. Joint Attacks by Turkey and Iran last year didn't get much press either.
George Bush is a declared enemy of both Syria and Iran. Both countries are now supporting Turkish attacks against the Kurds, America's best friends in Iraq. The US military is bogged down in Iraq and virtually powerless to help the Kurds. How long will America remain welcome in Iraq if a major conflict breaks out between the Kurds and Turkey? If America does not step in, the Kurds will suffer substantial losses at the hands of Turkey, and perhaps, Iran. What is clear is that the PKK will continue to kill Turkish soldiers to provoke the crisis some Kurds see as the shortest path to independence. A Turkish invasion of Iraq is no longer a question of if, but when.
