Once again, the "ex-gay" gospel singer Obama's campaign can't seem to live without strikes a blow against his critics and once again promulgates his asinine view that religion can "cure" homosexuality. (link):
"Don't call me a bigot or anti-gay, when I have been touched by the same feelings," McClurkin went on. "When I have suffered with the same feelings. Don't call me a homophobe, when I love everybody … Don't tell me that I stand up and I say vile words against the gay community because I don't. I don't speak against the homosexual. I tell you that God delivered me from homosexuality."
To keep it short and sweet: If Obama's campaign can't live without this homophobic jackass, then I can't support Obama.
McClurkin's position -- in which homosexuality is pathologized, and treated as a condition to be cured -- isn't from the fringe of Democratic politics; it's from deep in the wingnut right. It's hateful, regardless of the contortions he goes through in order to make it sound like he's delivering a message of love. It's a message of prejudice. To the exact extent that this message is rallying anyone in support of Obama who wouldn't otherwise support him, it will result in making gays second-class participants in the campaign and a hypothetical Obama administration.
Why does Obama need this guy?
Why are we not all over Obama to get rid of him?
