I live in New York City, so Charles Schumer is my Senator. I want him to kill the Mukasey nomination in the Judiciary Committe. Please help me get the message to him, especially if you're a New York resident. Elected folks take the opinions of their constituents more seriously.
Contact info, along with my email to Chuck, is below the fold.
Use the email form, it's quick and easy. Here's my 2 cents:
Dear Senator Schumer,
Following the press coverage of the Mukasey nomination, my impression is that he refuses to condemn torture as illegal, and asserts the President's "right" to ignore Constutitional laws passed by the Congress as long it's done as part of his role as "Commander in Chief."
Unfortunately, the Constitution of the United States does not permit the President to ignore Constitutional laws he simple doesn't like.
Furthemore, under both the US Code of Military Justice and the Geneva Conventions, to which we are obviously a signatory and are therefore the law of the land, torture is clearly illegal.
Consistent with your oath to uphold the Constitution, I fully expect you to renounce your support for Mukasey.
We need an Attorney General who will begin to repair the grave damage done to the rule of law by this administration and Alberto Gonzales, not one who will further enable its erosion.
Better no AG for the remainder of Bush's term than someone who has publicly admitted that he supports Bush's unConstitutional power grab.
I live right around the corner from you in Park Slope and often see you riding your bike down my street, which gives me a feeling of pride -- there goes my Senator, Hi Chuck!
My pride will be severly diminshed if you allow an Attorney General nominee out of committee who has publicly disavowed the Constitution he would be sworn to uphold.
Thanks,
-[Astoria Chris]
Let Chuck know what you think. If you're intereted in calling or faxing, the numbers for his Washington and New York state offices are at the bottom of this page.
Thanks, from me, and all Americans who think the Constitution and the rule of law in this country are important.
