Hillary Clinton has triangulated herself into a pretzel, providing great material for Republicans to use against her on the topic of illegal immigration in the general election, if she makes it that far.
Remember New York Governor Elliot Spitzer's plan to provide drivers' licenses to illegal immigrants? First Hillary wouldn't say where she stood on it during the last Democratic debate.
Then after she got criticized, she said she supported it.
"Senator Clinton supports governors like Governor Spitzer who believe they need such a measure to deal with the crisis caused by this administration's failure to pass comprehensive immigration reform. As President, her goal will be to pass comprehensive immigration reform that would make this unnecessary," the statement said. Campaign advisers, pressed to explain her view more clearly, said that she ultimately supports the driver's-license proposal.
Now Spitzer has withdrawn his support for the plan, and....
Now Hillary is against it.
"I support Governor Spitzer's decision today to withdraw his proposal. As president, I will not support driver's licenses for undocumented people and will press for comprehensive immigration reform that deals with all of the issues around illegal immigration including border security and fixing our broken system."
This is exactly the kind of thing that hurt John Kerry in 2004, and allowed Republicans to provide a caricature of a politician that didn't really stand for anything. The thing with Hillary is, it truly is beginning to appear that she doesn't.
