As someone who subscribes to the personally prolife, but politically prochoice position, I am in wholehearted agreement with prolifers who abhor people who abort on the grounds of discovering their child has Down's syndrome. This column in the Wash post mentions how abortion approaches 90% for those detected with Down's Syndrome. I am curious if progressive prochoicers find this disturbing. If so, I believe it would help the prochoice image in the eyes of many voters, who believe prochoicers have no moral code or values when it comes to abortion.
Washington Post Column
There are lots of reasons I am sympathetic to for why someone would choose terminating a pregnancy: The guy's a deadbeat or AWOL, poverty, rape, etc. But choosing to abort because your baby doesn't live up to some genetic ideal is not one of them. I think it goes against all the values progressives should believe in of defending the weak, innocent, disabled. I suppose some of the more extreme prochoicers would say it's all up to the woman and she should do whatever the hell she wants and she doesn't have to justify if to anyone. But I think a society that treats horribly and looks down on those with different genetics is one we should be ashamed of.
