Why not begin impeachment proceedings and investigate Bush and Cheney? So what if there is only a year left to Bush's term? Do we let teachers who have been alleged to be child molesters keep teaching until the end of the semester or the end of the school year? Do we say "It's not worth investigating him/her because there are only two weeks of school left"? Suppose we had a teacher who was within two weeks of retirement. Wouldn't that teacher still be suspended and investigated?
What about all the Senators and Congressmen who have resigned as soon as they were alleged to have committed some sort of unapproved sexual acts? They haven't been saying "Just let me stay until the end of my term." Well, except for Larry Craig. Maybe they resign so they won't be investigated, but if they refused to resign, wouldn't the investigation be demanded?
Or football players? No one says "It's not worth investigating this guy. It is only three weeks until the end of the season and he will be traded or dropped from the squad then. Let's just leave him alone and not look into the allegations." No one would dare say that anymore.
If we can't investigate the possibility of crimes that may have been committed or encouraged by our president, vice-president and other of their henchmen/women, why should we investigate any crimes in our country at all? We have at least two people who are clearly responsible for the deaths of over 3,000 Americans. Americans sent to their deaths by the lies of this administration. We have a hunt on for Osama bin Laden who did not himself directly kill 3,000 Americans in the US, but was responsible for rousing his followers with ideology that resulted in the attack on the World Trade Center. What basic difference is there between bin Laden and Bush in terms of killing Americans? Bush is sending Americans to their deaths to preserve democracy; bin Laden is sending al Quaeda members to their deaths to preserve fundamental Muslimism (is that a word?).
Bush's lies have far outdone bin Laden. Nineteen Al Quaeda members and about 3000 others died in the Trade Center and Pentagon attacks. In the Iraq attack, there have been 78,000 to 85,000 civilians documented to have died. Iraq Body Count(And that is only the documented deaths. Some estimates place civilian deaths as high as 1,000,000. WaPo) That means we have been responsible for 26 to 28 times as many documented deaths as Al Quaeda caused on 9-11.
There have also been 3886 total military deaths with 3189 of those being deaths in combat. Casualties in Iraq That's almost 205 times as many deaths in Iraq supposedly avenging 9-11 as Al Quaeda operatives died in our country.
Not only did Bush and Cheney stretch the truth to the breaking point in the buildup to Iraq, but they are now apparently covering up their lies and half-truths. CNN report on CIA tapes
No one will investigate these two after they are gone. Their underlings may be the subject of hearings, but Bush and Cheney will be left alone. Now is the time to take a look at what they have done. Nothing is more important to the future of our country than to ensure that leaders who commit crimes while in office be brought to account for those crimes. And most especially when those crimes have been crimes against the Constitution, the country and the people of this country.
Let's give the entire country a present and put impeachment back on our table for the holidays.
