This diary isn't that big a deal, it's just I've never noticed it myself before, and I've never seen it mentioned everywhere else before. I'm surprised because people often find patterns even where they don't exist. If anybody knows of any comments/articles on it, I'd be interested.
The pattern is that every 14 years the Republican Party makes a big gain: 1952, 1966, 1980 and 1994.
1952, 22 seat gain in the House, retook the House, Eisenhower elected President, first Republican President in 20 years.
1966, 47 seat gain in the House
1980, 35 seat gain, "conservative ideological majority", Reagan elected President
1994, 52 seat gain, retook the House for the first time in 40 years.
I think it would take a pretty major turn of events to have this pattern continue, but I thought it was kind of interesting.
