Without going into too much of the backstory, know I'm a college grad with strong professional credentials and an impressive resume, my husband was with a major company for eight years, earning accolades for his professionalism, work ethic and etc.
It never occurred to us we'd both be laid off in the same six month timeframe and out of work with no benefits to speak of.
We have a home, two cars, (had) a nice life. It hasn't come crashing down, but there's this pervasive sense of insecurity in all we do now.
Reasoning behind my support for John Edwards below the fold.
I saw last week that the Nashville area, despite being branded as a booming economy, has a higher unemployment rate than the national average.
I like that John Edwards has described alternative energy initiatives as heralding in a new economic strength - I think it will bring the kind of economic growth to our country that the tech boom did in the '90s under Clinton. And it's not just discovering new fuels, but also advanced propulsion technology to be used for more than just creating war. And being the only major candidate to with endorsement of
Then, there's the Health Care thing. Cobra was going to cost more than $750 a month - outrageous when you're out of work to begin with... So we have a barebones "god help us" policy and just cannot allow ourselves to get sick. Of all the candidates, John has the best plan. Period. And more importantly, unlike the current president and his underhanded way of conducting war with contributions of less than 1% of the country sacrificing, John's not afraid to ask for American's to sacrifice to ensure we all have healthcare. across the board, and frankly, I think that's the mature, leadership way to get this done...
There's the not taking money from lobbyists thing. To me that says he, of all the major candidates, will not allow big industry to dictate the way he runs the country. That is huge. HUGE! I'm not saying they all would, but a D name or two comes to mind as accepting major contributions and in the future owing favors.
And ironically, the Ralph Nader endorsement thing. Listen, for a girl from Tennessee that was there at the War Memorial Plaza that dark night in Nov. 2000, that.is.no.small.thing. For those who scoff at it, those who've only known the Nader spoiler effect, be aware for years he's been the consumer watchdog primo. To have his blessing is a huge thing and the reason he's always gone into elections was because he was disgusted by the corporate "ownership" of our candidates. In 2000, for those who might recall, Al Gore even had a late campaign outing that hurt him seriously - he held Occidental Petroleum Stock. Nader has a sharply defined bullshit-meter and he detects a geniuneness in Edwards that no other major candidate possesses.
Look, I'm supporting the Democratic candidate no matter who it is. I just think our country is best served, I personally am best served, my family, including two Iraq war vet sons is absolutely best served with John Edwards as our next President. I hope you'll agree and work to get him the nomination and ultimately, the election.
