Hi, you don't know me. My diaries stay up for all of 10 seconds. Four years writing diaries and not one recommended. But for what it's worth, here goes.
After last night's stunning defeat, it appears our BEST case scenario is four years of Hillary being bashed continuously by the media, to be followed up by four (or maybe eight) years of our buddy Jeb Bush. Bush-Clinton-Bush-Clinton-Bush. What a Democracy! (Or maybe it should be What Democracy?).
So before my diary disappears into the void, let me set forth my five simple life lessons! Enjoy! Maybe one will help you cope with yesterday's events.
- The BEST MOST PROGRESSIVE, ELECTABLE Candidate Won't Run
Al Gore in 2008 (and 2004)
Mario Cuomo in 1992
If there is a candidate out there who has a chance of winning AND bringing fundamental change, they won't run. Why change the world when you can speak to excited crowds, hang out with Hollywood types and win awards?
- IF an Excellent, PROGRESSIVE, ELECTABLE Candidate Runs, they never win
Gary Hart in 1984
Barack Obama(?) in 2008
Democratic voters inevitably choose the WEAKEST candidate, the least exciting "safe" choice. Go Mondale!
- IF a somewhat PROGRESSIVE, ELECTABLE Candidates wins, they will DISAPPOINT
Bill Clinton (1992 and 1996)
Yes, Bill was hounded by the press (and the right), yet he failed to use his considerable abilities to get a truly progressive agenda passed for America.
- In the End, MOST people just don't CARE
Probably because of one, two and three, above, most people don't care about politics. They can name every single American Idol winner (or if they are older, give you bio details about every movie star or stats from every sports team) but most can't even name their OWN state's senators.
So little ever changes.
- The Chicago Cubs will NEVER win anything!
Fortunately, most of you are not fans of this highly paid bunch of chokers. But who is to think that 2008 will be any different than 2007 or 1954 or 1914. Fukudome or no Fukudome! Nothing will ever change.
